As an astronomer I'm always checking out equpment so that when people come to our observatory we know about their telescope or if they ask about binoculars. This one your asking is one of the best on the market. The size is perfect for deep sky viewing, We have this one at our observatory and you made the right decision. I wouldn't reccomend anything different . Go for it . also pick up this book .. http://www.amazon.com/Touring-Universe-through-Binoculars-Astronomers/dp/0471513377/sr=1-2/qid=1166242809/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2/104-0796609-2479965?ie=UTF8&s=books WE have it and recomend it to all binocular stargazers. Here are some binocular astronomy sites as well . http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=binocular+astronomy+&btnG=Google+Search As far as seeing things during the day .. dawn and dusk and during the night are best times during the day. The sun's too bright to see planets etc during the day . go here to see what's up .. www.skytonight.com Enjoy the binoculars ! need any help finding objects , my email is on my profile

Any comments on these astronomical binoculars?
They are 20x80 and come with a tripod for $150. Good, bad, or ugly?

I've owned binoculars like these, and I found I never use them. They're too big and bulky and hard to use. I use my 10x50 binoculars all the time. If you want an 80mm aperture, you will do much better buying an 80mm telescope on a proper astronomical mount. Even then, I'd recommend a larger telescope, particularly if you're a beginner.
Cheap "giant" binoculars are they all pretty much the same?
Barska 20x80 Cosmos $240
Barska 20x80 $106
Barska 15x70 $60
Celestron 25x100 $298
Celestron 20x80 $199
Celestron 15x70 $84
Konus 20x80 $68
Oberwerk 20x90 $300
Oberwerk 20x80 Deluxe II $280
Oberwerk 20x80 $230
Oberwerk 15x70 $150
Zhumell 20x80 $140
My family has a rural bed and breakfast, with a 3+ acres of meadows and another 3+ acres of woods.
It is very popular with bird watchers, but it has been pointed out that it is very dark with good horizons, making it good for astronomy too.
We'd like to get some binoculars for our guests to use. Perhaps 2 pairs of 15x70's and 1 pair of 20x80 or larger.
Are the more expensive Oberweks any better than the others? I would have expected the Celestrons to cost more...
I'd appreciate any experiences you've had with these or similar. Thanks.
The inexpensive Chinese big binoculars have pretty much wiped out the medium priced versions, though I think Orion still carries some of these. Be sure to get proper mounts for these, as they all are too heavy and too high magnification to hand hold. Some sort of parallelogram mount is best. Unless you make them yourself, the mounts will cost more than the binoculars!
Which one is a better telescope?
i was looking between both of these great telescopes to be my first and i was wondering which is a better bargain? the Orion SkyQuest XT10 Classic Dobsonian Telescope or Zhumell Z10 Deluxe Dobsonian Reflector Telescope .

i like the fact that both come with a free accessory such as starry night software (for the orion skyquest) and free shipping plus a free laser pointer (zhumell z10)..
i can't make out which one is a better buy..
any help or comments would be appreciated. thanks!
I went with a 8" Zhumell about 2 years ago, mainly because it was so less expensive than the Orion. The Zhumell is almost all GSO made (Taiwan), and good quality. There are only 2 firms that manufacture all the big company's tube Dobs, and they are about the same in quality. You will have an advantage over me, because the new Zhumell mount is superior to mine, which did not have ajustable tension and has had some issues (albiet small and easy to fix). Truely, save your money and put it towards a good widefield 2" E.P., like a 32mm meade 5000 plossl ($150 new, about 100 used), or a more expensive Televue Panoptic or Nagler. The Orion only comes with 1 1/4 E.P.s and the Zhumell 2" E.P. is a Kellner, not very good with anything faster than about F/8.
